Miami-Dade Judge Charged With Indecent Exposure

MIAMI — A Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge resigned Thursday after allegations that he exposed himself inside a bathroom on the University of Miami campus.
Douglas Chumbly immediately resigned his Circuit Court seat after a formal misdemeanor charge was brought against him.
Chumbly was appointed Circuit Court judge two years ago and presided mostly over juvenile court cases.
Prosecutors said Chumbly walked into a men’s campus bathroom on Sept. 25 and exposed himself to someone in a “vulgar or indecent manner,” court records show. The restroom is next to a popular campus coffee shop and a campus library.
“I’m not shocked as to who it was. I’m shocked that it actually happened here and we didn’t even hear about it,” said student Juliessa Criollo.
“It’s been three weeks. That’s a really long time not to hear about something like that,” said student Manny Melo.
Chumbly, who was arrested shortly after the allegations, did not mention the crime in his resignation letter to Gov. Charlie Crist.
He wrote: “This is to advise that I am resigning my position as a Circuit Court judge in and for the 11th Judicial Circuit, effective immediately. It has been my distinct honor and privilege to serve the people of the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County.”
It is unclear why Chumbly was on the University of Miami campus.
He did not answer the door at his Palmetto Bay home Thursday night. A lawyer representing Chumbly’s criminal case did not return phone calls.
